Butterfly Agama
The Butterfly Agama Lizard, known scientifically as Leiolepis Belliana, has become a popular pet among the pet trade. Though they are popular not much is known about their lives in the wild. The Butterfly Agama can grow up to 20inches in length and live upwards of 10 years in captivity, with appropriate care. They are native to China and Southeast Asia. These beautiful lizards are recommended for intermediate-advanced reptile keepers as they can sometimes be finicky about food and staying hydrated. |
Enclosure & Substrate
A single adult Butterfly Agama can be housed in a minimum of a 20 gallon aquarium/terrarium, preferably a 20 gallon long so they have more room to move around. You should have an airy screen lid on top, to provide air movement as Butterfly Agama's thrive in a more aerated environment.
Agama's enjoy digging and burrowing, so we recommend a substrate they can dig into. Such as; Aspen, Reptile Safe Sand, Coco Husk, Bark Bedding, Repti Chips, or Jungle Mix. Be sure to also add in plenty of hides and logs for your Agama to hide in and to also lay on top of to bask.

Heating & Lighting
A comfortable temperature is around 75-85F during the day and nighttime to drop around 70F. To help maintain the heat in the aquarium we recommend using an infrared heater, or a ceramic heat emitter, which will put heat off but no light. LEDs or other low-wattage light bulbs work best for maintaining the ambient temperatures Agama's need access to UV light to grow properly and to maintain healthiness, in addition to a UV light there also needs to be a basking spot with a light that can keep the temperature of 95F.
Reptiles thermoregulate, which means they need a "cool" and a "hot" side to warm up and cool down.

Feeding
Agama's are mainly insectivores; which means they eat bugs. But, they also can eat greens, their diet is very similar to a bearded dragons. In which you have to supply vegetables, leafy greens, and occasional fruit.
Below you'll find a list of safe insects, fruits, vegetables, and greens.
